Seven Card Hi / Lo
The game of seven card hi/lo begins with the dealer giving each player two cards face down. These are cards that each player will be able to keep secret from the other players. This is the point at which betting begins. Next, the dealer gives each player four cards face up - these are community cards - after which another round of betting takes place. Finally, the dealer gives everyone one more card, face-down. After the seventh card, there is a final round of betting. Of course, in seven card hi/lo, like any other poker game, you can fold at any time in the betting cycle. Just like in seven card stud, in seven card hi/lo the player makes the best hand possible using 5 of the seven cards dealt to him.
One important point to remember in seven card hi/lo is that aces can be both high and low. In some games, there will be no qualifying low hand. A qualifying low hand in seven card hi/lo consists of a hand where there is no card above an 8. A perfect low hand would be an Ace, 2, 3, 4, and 5. This is known as a wheel, or a bicycle. The winner of the low hand is determined by who has the lowest card, 8 or below. If two people have 8's as their high card, the next lowest card determines the winner. High hands use the traditional poker rankings to determine the winner.
Seven card hi/lo is a relatively simple game. Like most other poker games, there is a little bit of skill mixed in with the luck of the draw, making for a more interesting and more exciting game. Seven card hi/lo can be enjoyed at poker tables, among friends, or even as a family game that is simple enough for even little ones to understand and enjoy.
