Eight Card Stud

Eight card stud is one of the less known stud games, but can be one of the most fascinating. Each player is dealt eight cards, with the first four cards facing down, and the remaining four cards facing up. The player with the best poker hand gets the pot.

The game can be played by up to six people, with each player placing an ante at the beginning of each game. Five cards are then dealt to each player, four being pocket cards and the other a visible card. There is then a round of betting followed by another visible card dealt out to each player. This sequence is then repeated until all eight cards have been dealt. There is then one more round of betting, before all cards are shown and the player with the best hand picks up the pot.

Eight card stud is a difficult game, but once it is mastered you can compete in any poker game. It needs a lot of concentration, as you need to constantly re-evaluate your cards on every street. You don't want to be caught battling it all the way to the finish with a losing hand.

The game is ideal for experts of poker, because of the constant re-evaluation of the cards. Less experienced players should definitely start off with seven card stud before moving your way onto eight card stud. Though once you have made it to eight card stud, you will never want to go back again.
