Hints When Raising

(Q) Are there any hints to follow when I'm raising in Poker?

(A) Raising in poker is a very powerful tool. It can be used for many reasons. To be a good player you need to know what you want to get out of a raise and if its working.

The main reason to raise in poker is to get more money from your hand. You use this when you feel you have the best hand on the table.

Another reason to raise is to eliminate players. This usually happens when you pull AA or KK in the hole. You will want to get rid of players before they see the flop. AA and KK do very well against few players, but with lots of players there is a good chance they will lose after all five cards come out.

Raising can be used to gain more information. This is a very complex reason to raise, but can be very effective. It's best to use it on the flop or before. If you raise a player before the flop, and he raises back over you it tells you that he has a great hand (AA,AK). If he just calls you, this gives the impression that he has an okay hand.

On the otherhand , if its after the flop, and your opponent bets into you; if you call him you wont learn anything. Though if you raise, and he re-raises then he probably has a good hand.

Remember to have clear reasons when deciding to raise. You may accomplish more than one goal when raising. A smart player never puts himself in a position where they are raising just for the sake of it.
