Poker - A beginners guide

The first things that any new poker player will want to know about are the different ways of playing poker. At any given poker table, you may find Texas Hold'em, Omaha, Omaha High/Lo, Seven Card Stud, Razz, Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo, and Draw Hi. Texas Hold'em is one of the more popular types of poker being played right now, although the other variations are enjoying a sharp increase in popularity.

Even though there are many different kinds of poker games, each with a unique set of rules, there are a couple of rules that apply across the board to all different forms of poker. There are, perhaps most importantly, conduct codes. Basically, be polite; don't purposely do anything you shouldn't be doing, such as acting out of turn or throwing the cards at the dealer. If you let the dealer know that you are new, he or she will be more than happy to walk you through the mechanics until you get the hang of playing poker.

Another thing that is common among most forms of poker is what constitutes a high hand. A Royal Flush is rare and impossible to beat. It consists of an Ace, King, Queen, Jack and 10 of one suit. A straight flush is the next highest hand, and any consecutive 5 cards of the same suit will make a straight flush in poker. These are followed, in order, by a four of a kind, a full house (a pair and 3 of a kind), a flush, a straight, 3 of a kind, 2 pair, one pair, and high card.
