Is Video Poker beatable?

You see the video poker machines in the slot room; you see titles in the book store telling you how to play video poker and how to make money playing video poker. Everyone knows that real poker is beatable, primarily because you are not playing against the house. However, in video poker, you are playing against the house. So the question is, is video poker beatable or not?

For a casual player who is more interested in having a good time and not worrying about little details, the answer is no. The house creates an advantage for itself on all of its table games and slot machines, of which video poker is one. The house advantage, needless to say, is difficult to beat. However, when it comes to video poker, it is not impossible to beat. There are things you can do to beat video poker.

So, what piece of information does the knowledgeable poker player who can beat video poker have that the more casual player does not have? The knowledgeable player knows to look at the pay-schedule displayed on each video poker machine to determine if that machine is a beatable machine. In most cases, but not all, the pay schedule for the most number of coins played is the most important. If you are trying to win at video poker playing the max number of coins is important. Look for games that pay relatively high amounts for full houses, flushes, and straights when compared to the pay out for a pair of jacks or better.
