I'm a beginner - Which Poker game?

For the beginning poker player, who is now just finding out that there are a heck of a lot more poker options that Five Card Draw, the field can be quite daunting. From Five Card Stud, to Texas Hold'em to Omaha Hi/Lo, there are literally dozens of variations to the game and seemingly more invented all the time.

There are three main types of poker; Draw, Stud and Shared Card types. In the games that make up the Draw category, players receive a full hand on the initial deal, they then discard some of those cards, which are then replaced with new cards from the deck. Some of the options include 5 Card Draw, Jacks to Open, Threes and Anaconda. 5 Card Draw is the most popular and the one most people are familiar with.

In most variations of Stud poker, players are dealt an initial amount of cards, to which one more card is added for each round of betting. In a few variations, each player receives all of their cards, but they are revealed at specific intervals while betting takes place for each interval. The most popular variations of this are 5 Card Stud and 7 Card Stud. Baseball, Midnight Baseball or No Peek and Caribbean Stud are also popular variations.

The third category involves shared cards or community cards. In these games, players are dealt a small amount of cards each, and then cards are placed on the table that are common to all the players.
